Meet our Team

Dr. Gregory Ohanian

Dr. Gregory Ohanian was born and raised in Pasadena and has been lucky enough to experience all the wonderful things the Rose City has to offer. Driven by his love for natural beauty and his passion for instilling confidence in others, Dr. O enjoys creating beautiful smiles and healthy bites that will last a lifetime. Dr. O attended Maranatha High School, where he graduated at the top of his class. He went on to study biological sciences at the University of California, Irvine, and later earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California, graduating with high honors. After dental school, Dr. O fulfilled his lifelong dream and completed an orthodontic residency program at Columbia University in New York City. There, he earned his Master of Science in Orthodontics degree upon completion of the elite three-year specialty orthodontic program. He is proud and honored to be the only Ivy League trained and Board Certified Orthodontist in Pasadena. Upon graduation, Dr. O felt strongly about moving back to the Rose City, where his roots are, to be close to his family and friends and give back to the community by transforming smiles!

Though Dr. O has never been the best in team sports, he loves a good work out and anything that presents a physical challenge- hiking, bodybuilding (you should ask to see his photos), yoga, and his most recent interests, golfing and skiing.

To stay up to date with the latest in orthodontic advances and better serve his patients, Dr. O regularly attends continuing education courses and remains active in various national, regional and local professional organizations, including the American Board of Orthodontists (ABO), the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists (PCSO) and the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society (SGVDS). He is a Preferred Provider of Invisalign and is highly trained in treating patients of all ages, children and adults alike.

Orthodontics for Juniors

As early as age seven, a child will begin to experience changes with their teeth. Baby teeth will come out, gaps and spaces may be more apparent, and you’ll begin to question whether or not braces are the right option for your child.

Each child comes with his or her own unique dental and facial makeup that needs to be monitored over time. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child has their first Orthodontic exam around the age of seven. Scheduling an appointment around this point in your child’s life is perfect to start to evaluate their facial growth patterns and teeth maturation.

At GO Orthodontics, your child will be invited to become a member of Dr. O’s Kids Club, which offers free checkups with Dr. O every 6 months for continued monitoring of growth. During these checkups, your child will receive new x-rays and diagnostics which will help Dr. O evaluate their unique facial pattern for proper balance, symmetry, and growth. Your child will also have the opportunity to develop a relationship with Dr. O, and begin to feel comfortable with the GO Orthodontics team before actual treatment is needed.

Some signs or habits that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic treatment are:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth,
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting,
  • Mouth breathing,
  • Thumb sucking,
  • Finger sucking,
  • Crowding, misplaced or blocked out teeth,
  • Jaws that shift or make sounds,
  • Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth,
  • Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all, and
  • Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face.

Junior Treatment Options:

The Observation period at GO Orthodontics will be experienced by your child through Dr. O’s Kids Club. While your child is in observation, there will be no treatment. The Kids Club offers free semi-annual checkups with Dr. O, and allows for hands-on monitoring of your child’s unique case in order to determine the best option if/when treatment is needed after all the teeth have come in.

Because it is so important to monitor your child’s progress, your child’s membership to the Kids Club is free, and all semi-annual checkups will be complimentary.

The goal of early treatment is to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems. Early treatment serves as a basic quick-fix, and helps make room for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of extractions in the future.

Early treatment is not always necessary for everyone. However, Phase I treatment can allow Dr. O to set the foundation of your child’s smile through use of methods that are less invasive when implemented as a child is growing. Once the face and jaws are fully formed, additional treatment will most likely be necessary.

Schedule a complimentary new patient exam with Dr. O and let us help you find the best option for your child! Call us today to reserve your appointment!

Orthodontics for Teens

At GO Orthodontics, there is no “one size fits all”. We recognize that every Teen is different, so we help you explore the options of treatment that will get them the most functional, best-looking, and most efficient result possible.

During your first visit, you and your teen will meet the GO Orthodontics team, and we will walk you through each step of orthodontic treatment. We’ll take photos, x-rays, and measurements to best assess the impact braces will make on your teen’s smile. Dr. O wants to make sure your teen has the best experience possible while they are in their braces on their way to their new confident smile.

Call or sign-up now for a free consultation and let us go the extra mile for your smile!

Teen Treatment Options:

Classic metal brackets with wires and rubber-bands
Transparent braces paired with normal wires.
Clear retainer-type appliance referred to as an aligner that is changed a few times a month to align your teeth gradually.
These braces are similar in structure and function to the traditional braces but are bonded behind your teeth. Hence, you can get your teeth straightened without anyone knowing that you are wearing braces. These braces have all the benefits of traditional braces, but are less noticeable and the easiest to remain compliant with. The custom made unique wires used with our lingual braces also reduce the need for monthly wire changes, making this option very suitable for busy teens.

Orthodontics for Adults

You may think you missed your chance at a beautiful straight smile, but we are here to prove you otherwise! At GO Orthodontics, we believe it’s never too late, and we’d love to help you achieve a confident smile and healthy bite because you deserve it!

When you come in for your complimentary consultation with Dr. O, we will walk you through a complete oral examination, including photos, x-rays and an overall assessment of the esthetic aspects of your teeth, lips, jaw and mouth. By doing so, we will be able to show you how you can improve your smile through orthodontics, and can help you choose your preferred treatment option.

Adult Treatment Options:

Traditional metal braces work great for nearly everyone. These include custom brackets and wires for each patient. This type of treatment is very helpful if specific movements are needed for the best result. They are also great when rubber-bands are needed for bite correction.
Clear braces have all the advantages of traditional braces with the added luxury of being clear and less noticeable. Transparent brackets look beautiful and work using normal wires, just like conventional braces.
Invisalign treatment includes a series of plastic clear aligners that move your teeth through small, gradual movements. You’ll wear a set of them, and switch them out with new ones every 2 weeks or so until eventually your teeth are straight and beautiful. Many adults love this option as you can remove them to eat or for special speaking/social events.

Types of Braces

Traditional metal braces work great for nearly everyone. These include custom brackets and wires for each patient. This type of treatment is very helpful if specific movements are needed for the best result. They are also great when rubber-bands are needed for bite correction.

Lingual braces are great for patients who are looking to achieve their best results in the easiest and least noticeable way. These braces are bonded to the back side (tongue side) of the teeth, making them invisible to others. Unlike clear aligner therapy, there is no issue with compliance. You don’t have to worry about taking your trays in and out every time you eat or drink. The technologically advanced wires our office uses for these braces allow for natural flossing and brushing, enabling patients to stay on top of their oral hygiene. A state-of-the-art iTero® scanner is used to digitally scan the patient’s mouth, which then helps create customized wires that are programmed to fit the teeth of each unique patient, guaranteeing highly individualized treatment. The wires are custom made for each individual case, which reduces the need for monthly wire changes. In fact, usually only two to three sets of wires are needed throughout the entire treatment!

Braces Procedure

The first step towards your smile is your consultation with Dr. O. During your first visit, we will get you acquainted with the office and GO Orthodontics team, and will conduct a complimentary exam, which will include diagnostics, photos and x-rays to assess your dental situation. Dr. O will spend time with you to discuss your main concerns and treatment goals, answer any questions you have, and present you with your treatment options. GO Orthodontics takes your budget, lifestyle and needs into account, so everyone has the opportunity to achieve a perfect smile.
Once you decide on your desired treatment, it’s time to place the braces and let them work their magic. If you are going with either Invisalign or lingual braces, Dr. O will use his state-of-the-art iTero® scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth. No more gooey mess with taking molds and no need for re-dos! Scans will result in your set of aligners for Invisalign, or your customized wires for your lingual braces. The next step is very similar for either lingual or traditional braces: Dr. O and his team fit the brackets, archwire and elastics to your teeth. The pain-free process lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
You’ll come in for periodic appointments during which the GO Orthodontics team will adjust your braces. We’ll take extra care in addressing your concerns throughout treatment and make sure things are progressing smoothly. Each time you visit you’ll be a little closer to your amazing new smile.
Congratulations! You’ve made it to the finish line! Dr. O will remove your braces, which is a painless process, and you’ll finally get to admire your perfectly straight teeth and radiating smile!
Everyone requires a retainer to maintain the new position of their teeth. The retainer will be uniquely designed to fit your new smile and adjustments will occasionally be necessary to keep your teeth straight post-treatment. Trust us, when you see your smile, you’ll want to protect your investment!

Life with Braces

Congratulations on beginning your exciting journey towards your new smile! We will be with you every step of the way to make sure this is an amazing experience for you and your family. Here is what you can expect to feel immediately after getting braces and throughout your treatment. You are on your way to achieving the beautiful, healthy smile you deserve!

As with any new change, we all need time to adjust. During your first few days with braces, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures. This is perfectly normal and we promise your mouth will not be sore forever! To relieve the pain, we recommend dissolving one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water. Swish and gargle this solution in your mouth for just a couple of minutes (do not swallow the saltwater).

If the pain does not go away, you can also try taking a pain reliever. It is also not uncommon for your lips, cheeks, and tongue to become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become used to the braces. Every patient will be provided an orthodontic care kit, which will include wax that can help alleviate some of the irritation.

If your teeth begin feeling a little loose, don’t worry; this is normal! Your braces must first loosen your teeth to move them into the right position. Once they are moved into their right position, they will be secured and will not feel loose anymore.

Wires and bands tend to become loose throughout treatment. If you start to experience this at any moment, please be sure to reach out to us so we get you in to see Dr. O as soon as possible and provide you with tips to help you in the meantime.

Poking wires may be experienced throughout treatment. Please call our office as soon as possible so we can take care of you and repair the appliance. You may use the wax from your orthodontic care kit to help temporarily relieve any irritation.

For broken brackets, please call our office immediately! We will arrange for a visit with Dr. O to repair the bracket for you.

Dr. O needs your cooperation to help you successfully achieve your best smile! Your teeth and jaw will only move toward their corrected positions if you follow Dr. O’s instructions and consistently wear the rubber bands or other appliances as prescribed. Damaged appliances and lack of cooperation with treatment instructions will only lengthen the overall treatment time. We want to get you in your new smile as soon as possible, so work with us and we can help you get there!

Having great oral hygiene is always a good idea, but it becomes even more important while you are in your braces! To ensure a beautiful and healthy smile at the end of your treatment, please be sure to brush and floss regularly.

Attention all athletes! Don’t let your braces stand in the way of your next game. A protective mouth guard will help keep your braces safe while you are out in the field or playing on the court. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please call us right away! If you experience any traumatic pain or bleeding, it may be best to visit the emergency department of the nearest hospital.
If you are a sour candy lover like Dr. O, we have some bad news for you. You will need to temporarily adjust your diet during your treatment to help protect your orthodontic appliances. This means avoiding any food that seems tough, sticky, or crunchy. Sugary drinks and sodas should be cut out as well. Don’t worry, you’ll be snacking on candy and chips before you know it, and for the time being, soft foods like ice cream and pudding aren’t so bad… Below you’ll find a guide to help you with your food choices, but you will often need to use your best judgement.
  • Chewy Foods– bagels, hard rolls, licorice
  • Crunchy Foods– popcorn, ice, chips
  • Sticky Foods– caramels, gum
  • Hard Foods– nuts, candy
  • Foods You Have To Bit Into– corn on the cob, apples, carrots
  • Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces.
  • Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.
